Your home Wi-Fi would now give an enhanced performance due to the new Wi-Fi chips announced by Qualcomm. The two new chips comprise system-on-a-chip (SoC) for the both network infrastructure (IPQ8074) and client devices (QCA6290). The enhanced Wi-Fi chips would be launched in the first half of 2017 ushering in a new era of wireless connectivity. The all-new 802.11ax is undoubtedly the future of Wi-Fi. Since the debut of 802.11b in 1999, it became better and better with 802.11g, 802.11n and the 802.11ac standard which is the currently the most usable and popular chip.

The new 802.11ax is very much backward compatible just like the previous Wi-Fi generations. This time the standard focuses on high speed, efficiency, and enhanced network capacity especially at a crowded place. Hence, 802.11ax renders quickest real world speeds ever reported, better than all previous standards. In fact, it is said to be four times faster than 802.11ac standard… mind-blowing! It focuses on overcoming the earlier problems of density of overlapping networks and managing traffic density.

Qualcomm is proud of announcing the IPQ8074 system-on-chip (SOC) for broadcasters which is a highly integrated platform designed for access points, routers and gateways. The chip is installed with a great feature – Qualcomm’s Wi-Fi Self Organizing Network (SON) that simplifies installation and optimization of traffic. The 14nm chip has MAC and baseband, 11ax radio and quad-core 64-bit A53 CPU; it uses 12×12 Wi-Fi configurations and also supports MU-MIMO for uplink. With all this, it promises to deliver the highest speeds over large network area.

For a user simply put, it means that with the new 802.11ax, you can do higher bandwidth activities on more devices by prioritizing capacity. To meet the ever increasing demands of today’s consumption of blend of devices and applications, capacity is the most important aspect to measure a network’s ability. So, it’s good news that you would get better Wi-Fi at homes, airports, schools, colleges, restaurants etc.

The Senior Vice President and General Manager of Qualcomm, Mr. Rahul Patel, said it would offer richer connected experiences rendering ample Wi-Fi capacity. The new 802.11ax is the next future of Wi-Fi industry offering high efficiency and high capacity networks.

From the client’s side, Qualcomm’s SoC has the ability to offer four times increase in the speed throughout in a crowded network. The chip combines 2.4 GHz and 5GHz with Dual Band Simultaneous (DBS) feature to deliver maximum speeds of up to 1.8 Gbps Wi-Fi speed. The chip also has the ability of reducing the power consumption by two thirds. All things said and done, we can’t wait for it to be commercially available so we can grab them with our grubby paws.
